Twitter says Performance:Check Next:UI
Today Twitter launched a new sidebar design on their web platform. Its seems now that they have tackled there performance issues they have moved their focus to improving the design. They have now added tabs to the right hand sidebar to help you navigate your tweet conversations. They also improved the styling of your following, followers, and updates counts.
My first reaction to these changes is that it is a waste of their time. A majority of people using Twitter now are doing so via third party applications like Twhirl, Tweetdeck, or iGoogle’s BeTwittered. I would say I tweet from my twitter home page (http://twitter.com/ryangraves) 1 out of every 50 tweets. My mind is not made up on whether this really shows a lack of focus for the Twitter team, or if on the contrary, it shows that they are continually looking to improve the users experience with the service.
If you watched the BearHug Camp last week you saw the conversation when Evan, Biz, and Adam spoke about how they have been responding to user issues. Was UI really a main user issue? I doubt it. It seems to me that their main concern should be not UI, but scalability and direction of growth. Adding features like groups or security in order to put the Yammer’s and the Present.ly’s out of biz is what I might look at if I were CEO…but I’m not, Evan is.
