Local Post: Palomar Hotel & Residences project permanently suspended

hotelpalomar_story1I found out tonight that the Palomar Hotel project would be put on permanent suspension. The Palomar Hotel was a project for downtown (Park East) Milwaukee that was promised to bring huge changes and growth to the area. With the City of Milwaukee as a contributor to the project it seems as though the economic downturn has made it so the city will not be able to contribute the promised funds. Thus, the project has been indefinitely shut down.

Gatehouse Capital an external to Milwaukee company has permanently suspended its development plans for the Palomar Hotel & Residences. Their intended involvement in this project promised huge returns for the area in economic growth. Retail stores and an entirely new area of town was supposed to be developed in the open area left in the wake of the freeway exit torn down in 2003.

Below is my letter to Mary Beth, my main contact with this project. I met Mary Beth through the Spreenkler organization.

Mary Beth- I am sincerely sorry that this occurred. I too was very excited to see what this surge of capital and energy would do to an area and a city with so much potential for growth.

The downturn in the US economy has really hit home for me over the last few months with missing out on a huge travel opportunity at work, then my sister losing her job, and now this event (among many more).

Let me just say that your efforts, your passion, and your future drive towards improving this area have not and will not go unnoticed or be ineffective. There will be large changes in this area because of efforts and groups like Spreenkler, ActionsTalk, and others.

Keep up the great work and don’t let the economy burst or even slow the growth of your extremely passionate bubble.

Cheers.

thanks for the shout out! honestly, i think you and i have seen that so much good can come from the lay off/ bad economy situation, and while it's hard for most people to see that -- i think with recent experiences at hand, (my lay off, and for most of us who are feeling the effects of the down economy) it's clear that when things are flipped upside down we are given an opportunity to learn and grow! that's what people need to focus on... the opportunity to grow from these challenges.

good post!

Go online and read the press clippings from this projects inception. It seems that the project was doomed from the start....http://www.milwaukeepalomar.com/flashAssets/articl...

What a disappointment! The amount of passion and energy that Mary Beth and her team shared about Palomar was indescribable. I can not believe that this project, which was shaping up as a fantastic opportunity for the city of MKE, will now become an unrealized piece of history.
