I’m not here to repeat those. As you well know, one thing that I am a huge fan of is not just tech but the productive application of technology. Tech with a purpose! I wanted to re-post something from Andrew Mason’s (founder of ThePoint.com) blog. Andrew talks about a certain application of Yammer that he thinks would be valuable for ThePoint. This is exactly the type of thinking I like and want to work to promote in our industry.

It forces us to decide what we’re working on. Computers provide an endless stream of opportunities to be distracted. If you don’t articulate what you’re working on, you often end up doing 10 different things, and none of them well. In that sense, using Yammer is a great way to force us to pick a task and focus on completing it.

I find in my work day that this can become a problem. Andrew is right about how you can get lost in the web via a computer. It’s sometimes hard to really stay focused on the completion of a project. I wonder if Yammer will work for companies who don’t officially buy into such a service. Can the employee of a huge company take advantage of Yammer without the company cutting a big contract with Yammer? Let me know if you do.

Congratulations to Yammer for winning TC50. You were among some seriously great companies and you rose to the top.

As I entered into the process of system spec’ing and prototyping I needed advice on PHP vs. Rails, how funding works, and other early stage questions. Andrew was a huge help and very encouraging.

Recently, he did an interview with a friend of mine Dave Cohn on Dave’s blog. I’ve decided to post Dave’s interview of Andrew because it gives a great background into what ThePoint.com is doing and where they are heading and briefly talks about Dave’s non-prof start-up Spot.us.

Good luck to both Andrew and Dave in their ventures. Let me know if I can help!
